Why You Have Those Little Bumps (Keratosis Pilaris) And How To Finally Smooth Them.
"Chicken skin." Rough bumps. Dry, bumpy arms. Whatever you call it, if you've got Keratosis Pilaris (KP), you've probably spent years trying to scrub it away.
The frustrating part? The harder you scrub, the more irritated your skin often becomes. The good news is KP is incredibly common, completely harmless and, with the right routine, very manageable.
After more than 20 years treating skin, I've helped countless clients transform rough, bumpy skin into smoother, healthier skin. The secret isn't a miracle product or an aggressive scrub. It's using the right products consistently.
Let's dive in.
What is Keratosis Pilaris?
Keratosis Pilaris (KP) is a common skin condition that develops when keratin, a natural protein found in your skin, builds up around the hair follicle.
Instead of shedding normally, dead skin becomes trapped, creating those rough little bumps many people notice on their:
- Upper arms
- Thighs
- Buttocks
- Sometimes the cheeks
Many people also experience redness and dryness, making the bumps even more noticeable.
The important thing to know is this:
KP isn't caused by poor hygiene and it's not something you can wash away, and scrubbing harder usually makes it worse.
Why Moisturiser Alone Isn't Enough
One of the biggest mistakes I see is treating KP like dry skin. While hydration is incredibly important, moisturiser alone won't remove the keratin plugs causing the bumps.
The best results come from combining three things:
✔ Physical exfoliation
✔ Chemical exfoliation
✔ Daily hydration
Each step has a different job, and together they help restore smoother, healthier skin.
Daily Smooth Skin Routine
☼ Morning - Hydrate and Heal with Reveal Daily Repair Body Milk
Healthy skin starts with a healthy skin barrier. Reveal delivers super light-weight hydration, while strengthening your skin barrier and replenishing moisture levels (think of this not, as a moisturiser, but a serum for your body).
- Apply 2-3 pumps of Reveal per limb, front torso and back torso every day.
Skin Tip: You may notice this body milk absorbs straight into your skin at first and you'll need to apply more. This is totally normal and often a sign your skin is dehydrated and your skin cells are lacking the vitamins and minerals they need. Don't worry though, within a few days as your skin cells become saturated you'll find you need less product.
☾ Night 1 - Buff and Increase Circulation with Exfoliating Body Mitt
Our exfoliating glove rapidly, physically buffs and removes the excess dead skin sitting on and clogging the surface.
- Use the Exfoliating Mitt during your shower every second night using firm, even pressure over the rough areas. Your skin will flush pink afterwards - that's completely normal.
- Once dry, apply a layer of Reveal.
Skin Tip: Rather than scrubbing one spot until it's sore, aim for even exfoliation across the whole area.
☾ Night 2 - Dissolve the Build-Up with Revive Exfoliating Body Moisturiser
Revive works differently to the mitt. Instead of physically removing surface dead skin, the exfoliating acids sink in to help dissolve the build-up around the hair follicle.
- To clean, dry skin, apply 1 pump of Revive per treatment area on the evenings you're NOT using the mitt.
Skin Tip: After around one month, once your skin has adjusted, you can gradually increase to using both the mitt and Revive together (if your skin is tolerating the routine well).
AND REPEAT.
What Should You Expect?
Week 1
Your skin may absorb Reveal incredibly quickly - this is completely normal as your skin replenishes vitamin and mineral levels. The Exfoliating Body Mitt may feel quite rough and leave your skin looking flushed and Revive may tingle on application.
Weeks 2-4
Your skin will begin feeling softer, smoother and less dry and looking more radiant. You will find you are using less products as your skin becomes healthier and you will notice less reactivity to the skincare.
Weeks 4-8
With consistent use, rough bumps begin flattening, redness settles and skin texture continues improving.
Remember, consistency always beats intensity.
My Final Tip
Please don't judge your skin day by day.
KP improves gradually, and the biggest changes often happen when you look back after a month or two and realise your skin feels and looks completely different.
Stick with the routine. Trust the process. And celebrate the small wins along the way - your skin will thank you for it.
